Abstract

<p>Mapping of the medieval city of Turku by digital modelling of the building remains of archaeological<br />urban excavations<br /></p><p>In September 2018 began a doctoral research focusing on the urban archeology of the medieval city<br />of Turku. The study is limited to the medieval urban area of Turku and its surroundings, so for example,<br />the medieval Turku Castle or Koroinen are not involved. The research extends from the founding<br />of the city from around 1300 to the early 17th century, to the first 1634 urban mapping by Olof Gangius.<br />The maps of archaeological excavations in the medieval urban area form the most important<br />research material. Based on excavation maps, a digital map and 3D urban model will be made by using<br />GIS and 3D modelling. Serving as an aid in the mapping are the terrain map of the city of Turku,<br />land elevation model obtained by terrestrial laser scanning, press-drilling data of urban construction<br />studies, 3D-vector map of underground pipelines and depth data of the Aura River. On the basis<br />of mapping and modelling, the aim is to refine the location of early quarters, buildings and roads,<br />to evaluate the location of historical sites presented on historical maps of the medieval city, and to<br />explore the topography of the original landscape, land elevation and watercourse streams. Based on<br />the different properties associated with building remains (e.g. material), it is possible to present them<br />as occurrence ranges and spread maps. The survey also provides a clear picture of the researched,<br />destroyed and intact areas and new potential research sites. The perspective of the work is interdisciplinary<br />and it uses methods of medieval-, building- and urban archeology and represents digital<br />humanism.<br /></p>
