Tiivistelmä
Decision-making in product development projects is uncertain and is often based on opinions and gut feelings. On the other hand, software products have a lot of possibilities to collect data and feedback from users. User research is the process of understanding users, their behaviours, needs and motivations through different research methods. The concrete findings of user research can then be utilised to support decision-making in product development.
This thesis explores how user research could be implemented in an effective and practical way as well as how its findings can be utilised in product development. An extensive case study of a B2B SaaS company was used to address the presented research questions alongside a theoretical overview of the field’s literature. The results of these showed that user research provides best value in two typical product development decision-making scenarios, roadmap planning and during project development phases.
The case study introduced a model for user research that included practical guidelines for implementation and a product development guide called Product Playbook that specified how and when user research should be conducted and utilised during development phases. The case study provided a thorough view into how user research can be implemented in a B2B SaaS product and worked as groundwork for potential generalisation of the model. A concept model of a generally applicable model was introduced but such a generally applicable model would require more research into the topic.
