Classification of iron meteorites and description of mineralogy, geochemistry, and texture of the Lieksa-4 meteorite

Abstract

Iron meteorites can be classified to several different structural and chemical groups based on their composition, mineralogy, and textural features. The Lieksa-4 meteorite is a find from Löpönvaara, Lieksa, Eastern Finland. Compositionally, it consists of approximately 84 wt% Fe and 11 wt% Ni. In addition, it is enriched in P (3 wt%) and depleted in S (140 ppm). Trace elements Ga, Ge, Au, and Ir occur in low abundances, and do not follow any of the existing iron meteorite groups’ compositional trends.

The mineralogy of the Lieksa-4 meteorite consists of three phases: kamacite (α-(Fe, Ni)), schreibersite ((Fe,Ni)3P), and troilite (FeS). Kamacite constitutes approximately 75 wt% of the meteorite, and schreibersite 20 wt%. Troilite occurs as a minor phase with ≤ 1 wt%. All three phases occur as anhedral in the meteorite. The kamacite phase occurs in two different forms: (1) round, ≤ 0.5 mm granules; and (2) small, several tens of μm to submicron-size quench textures in schreibersite. Schreibersite occurs solely as matrix material between the large kamacite crystals. Troilite occurs within the matrix as ≤ 50 μm size angular crystals. The overall texture of the meteorite can be described as fine-grained, and the granule to matrix ratio is very high. The textural properties of the meteorite suggest rapid cooling from a P-rich melt.

Lieksa-4 cannot be classified into any of the existing iron meteorite groups based on its compositional and textural features. Thus, the Lieksa-4 meteorite should be classified as an ungrouped or anomalous iron meteorite.

Rautameteoriitit voidaan luokitella eri rakenteellisiin ja kemiallisiin luokkiin niiden koostumuksen, mineralogian, ja tekstuurin perusteella. Lieksa-4 on meteoriittilöydös Lieksan Löpönvaarasta, Itä-Suomesta. Se on koostumukseltaan noin 84 wt% Fe ja 11 wt% Ni. Lisäksi se on erittäin rikastunut fosforista (3 wt%), ja köyhtynyt rikistä (140 ppm). Se sisältää myös pieniä määriä hivenaineita Ga, Ge, Au, ja Ir, mutta niiden pitoisuudet eivät sovi yhteen rautameteoriittiryhmien pitoisuustrendien kanssa.

Lieksa-4 -meteoriitin mineralogia koostuu kolmesta eri faasista: kamasiitista (α-(Fe, Ni)), schreibersiitista ((Fe,Ni)3P), ja troiliitista (FeS). Näistä kamasiitti käsittää noin 75 wt% koko meteoriitista, ja schreibersiitti 20 wt%. Troiliitti esiintyy faaseista pienimpänä, ≤ 1 wt%. Kaikki kolme faasia esiintyvät meteoriitissa anhedrisina. Schreibersiitti esiintyy yksinomaan pienirakeisena perusmassana isompien kamasiittirakeiden ympärillä. Troiliitti esiintyy perusmassassa ≤ 50 μm kokoisina kulmikkaina rakeina. Meteoriitin tekstuuria voidaan kuvailla pienirakeiseksi, ja kamasiittirakeiden suhde perusmassaan on hyvin suuri. Meteoriitin tekstuuri viittaa nopeaan kiteytymiseen P-rikkaasta magmasta.

Koostumuksensa ja tekstuurinsa perusteella Lieksa-4 on hyvin hankala luokitella sopivaksi yhteenkään olemassa olevista rautameteoriittiryhmistä. Näin ollen, Lieksa-4 tulisi luokitella koostumukseltaan poikkeavaksi, epätyypilliseksi tai luokittelemattomaksi rautameteoriitiksi.
