Tiivistelmä
The Stanley Parable (Galactic Cafe 2013) is a single player first-person RPG videogame created by
Davey Wreden in 2011 where the player plays as Stanley, a regular office worker. The story is
presented via the voiceover of the game9s narrator and the gameplay is based on making choices and
obeying or disobeying what the narrator is advising the player to do. The game explores a multitude of
different themes including but not limited to choices, storytelling, freedom, and reality.
The central research question for this study was why and how The Stanley Parable has become such a
well-regarded game. Analyzing the game, the idea behind it, and what the most important features that
make the game work so well are. The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the design principles of the
game through first deconstructing it and then making another game with the detected core features.
The new game was played by testers and this study was established based on the results of the testing.
It was concluded that the game made for this test was a success, and the testers were satisfied and
enjoyed the new version of The Stanley Parable as well. There were some elements such as the
perspective and narrator changes that some of the testers preferred in the original game but overall, the
new version of the game got a good reception. The results of this study can be used in making games
with similar themes in the future or to simply understand why The Stanley Parable is such a popular
game.
